Let’s talk about the part no one really says out loud. “What if my friends or family find out I’m doing ATW?” Because that thought alone is enough to stop a lot of people before they even start. And I get it. It’s not even about being ashamed… it’s about the questions, the opinions, the judgement. The “why are you doing that?” The “do you really need to?” The looks. The assumptions. All of it.
But here’s the honest truth. People will have opinions no matter what you do. Working too much? They’ll talk. Don’t work enough? They’ll talk. Start something different? They’ll definitely talk. So if people are going to have something to say anyway… it might as well be while you’re making money.
For me, it came down to this. Are these people paying my bills? Are they up at night with my baby? Are they helping me build the life I actually want? No. So they don’t get to make the decisions either.
That doesn’t mean it’s easy. You might feel awkward at first. You might overthink it. You might even panic a bit at the idea of being “found out”. That’s normal. But confidence doesn’t come first. It comes after you decide you’re doing it anyway. And the more you back yourself, the less other people’s opinions actually matter.
Also, not everyone reacts the way you think they will. Some people won’t care. Some will be curious. Some might even respect the fact you’re finding a way to make money on your own terms. And the ones who judge? They were never going to understand your decisions anyway.
You don’t owe everyone an explanation. You don’t need to justify how you make your money. And you definitely don’t need permission to do something that works for you. Especially if you’re a mum, doing what you can to create more freedom, more flexibility, and more income.
At the end of the day, this is your life. Your situation. Your responsibilities. Your choices. Not theirs.
So if fear of being “found out” is what’s holding you back… just know this. Most people are too busy worrying about their own lives to focus on yours. And the ones who do? They don’t get a vote.
Do what works for you.
