How I Prioritise Home Life & ATW! Because Finding The Balance Isn’t Always Easy

When I first joined All Things Worn, I honestly had no idea how much it would become a part of my life. What started as something fun quickly became something I was really invested in. I loved making money, meeting new buyers, getting attention, creating content and seeing the notifications come through. There was always something to do — a message to reply to, a buyer to chat with, content to make, an order to organise or a new idea popping into my head.

And before I knew it… ATW was taking up a LOT of my time.

I think one of the biggest things I’ve had to learn since becoming a seller is that it can be very easy to become addicted to the excitement of it all.

There’s always that little thought of “I’ll just check my messages quickly”… and suddenly an hour has passed. 😂

When I first started, I found myself neglecting things at home without even really realising I was doing it. My house became messier and more untidy, and I wasn’t always giving my family and my partner the quality time they deserved.

I could be sitting with my partner but still be on my phone talking to buyers.

I could have a day off but spend most of it thinking about ATW.

I’d sometimes put off normal things around the house because there was always something more exciting happening online.

And although I was enjoying myself and making money, I eventually realised that I didn’t want my whole life to revolve around selling.

ATW is supposed to fit into my life — not the other way around.

So, what changed?

I started putting boundaries in place.

Now, my home life comes first.

I make sure my house is clean and tidy. I actually take the time to go food shopping on my days off, get the boring household jobs done and, most importantly, spend proper time with the people around me.

If I’m having a conversation with my partner, I try to actually be present in that conversation rather than constantly checking my phone.

That might sound like such a small thing, but for me it made a huge difference.

I’ve also stopped feeling like I need to constantly be available.

And THAT was probably the hardest part.

As a seller, it can sometimes feel like you should always be online. If you’re not posting, someone else is. If you don’t reply straight away, maybe a buyer will go elsewhere. If you don’t have new content, maybe people will lose interest.

But realistically, I’ve realised that I’m allowed to have a life too.

There are days when I don’t wear makeup.

There are days when I don’t take any photos.

There are days when I don’t offer online content.

There are days when I don’t feel like being “Ruby” and promoting myself.

And do you know what?

That’s completely okay.

I used to feel guilty about it. I felt like I should always be looking glamorous, always have something to offer and always be available.

Now I’m much more comfortable with disappearing for a little while when I need to.

I don’t have to wake up and immediately think about what I’m going to post.

I don’t have to spend every evening on my phone.

And I definitely don’t have to feel guilty for having a lazy day in my pyjamas! 😂

Sleep is important too!

One of the biggest changes I’ve made is actually going to bed earlier.

I used to stay up much later because there were always night-owl buyers around. And because you never know when someone might message, it was tempting to stay awake just in case.

But eventually I realised something…

Missing out on a buyer at 1am isn’t going to ruin my business — but constantly sacrificing my sleep definitely isn’t good for me.

So now, if I’m tired, I go to bed.

If someone messages while I’m asleep, they can wait until tomorrow.

I’m not going to lose sleep over the possibility of making a sale.

And actually, I think having that mindset has made me enjoy ATW more, rather than less.

Finding the balance

I’m definitely not saying I’ve completely mastered the balance. There are still days where I get carried away, spend too long on my phone or realise I’ve been sat thinking about ATW for hours.

But now I notice it.

And when I notice it, I can step away.

I think that’s the biggest difference.

I’ve learned that I can love what I do without letting it take over my entire life.

I can enjoy making money, chatting to buyers, creating content and having fun with ATW while still being a partner, a family member and a person with a home life outside of selling.

I also think it’s important to remember that social media and selling can give you a very unrealistic idea of what you’re supposed to look like or how often you’re supposed to be active.

You don’t have to constantly be glamorous.

You don’t have to post every day.

You don’t have to reply instantly.

You don’t have to be available 24 hours a day.

And you definitely don’t have to feel guilty for taking a break.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your business is actually step away from it for a little while.

Go and see your family.

Have dinner with your partner.

Clean your house.

Go food shopping.

Watch something rubbish on TV.

Have an early night.

Or just sit there doing absolutely nothing for a bit. 😂

Because at the end of the day, ATW is a part of my life — but it isn’t my entire life.

I still absolutely love being a seller. I love the freedom, the money, the confidence it’s given me and the people I’ve met along the way.

I just don’t want to miss out on my real life while I’m busy creating my online one.

For me, success isn’t only about how much I sell.

It’s about being able to make money from something I enjoy without sacrificing the things that matter to me outside of it.

And honestly, I think I’ve finally found a balance that works for me. ❤️

So if you’re a seller who sometimes feels guilty for taking a day off, not replying immediately or not looking like a glam goddess every single day…

Don’t.

Your buyers will still be there.

ATW will still be there.

And your life outside of ATW deserves your attention too. ❤️

Cbabiiixxx @Kay_x @ItsRuby I love you girls so much. Some of you girls on here are so wholesome human beings🥺💗

ItsRuby @Cbabiiixxx and remember, we’re still here when you get back.. the site ain’t leaving 🖤

Kay_x @Cbabiiixxx Lovely girl, you have to take a break. I was the same as you when I joined and it doesn’t help sales, you just end up offering a worse version of yourself that’s inauthentic. Please take a couple of days off ❤️

ItsRuby @Cbabiiixxx @Cbabiiixxx oh darling that hurt me!! 🖤 it’s so addictive isn’t it, take your time 🖤🫶🏼

Lacyveil Beautifully written Ruby 👏 💕

Cbabiiixxx Oh and I need to stop thinking I need to be in the % bracket. Being a top seller doesn’t beat being a top mum💗

Cbabiiixxx This literally just hit the nail on the head and I don’t think I’ve ever read a more powerful and relatable post. When I first joined I lost out on countless sleep, was constantly doing my face, lacking on household chores, not spending enough time with my ch1ldren. I’m still in that boat where there’s nights I stay up until gone 5/6am. I’m tired the next day, but I still have to show up the next day. And showing up is getting more difficult because the real me is tired and lacking energy and enthusiasm right now. I’ve told myself if I need a break I’m going to have one. Regardless if I miss out on a cheap or an expensive sale. My mental health comes first and my ch1ldren come first. Thank you so so much for this Ruby because I felt so trapped💗💗💗

LanaLovall Ruby this is absolutely spot on and something I am realising too about boundaries, time off, prioritising life outside of ATW. Thanks for putting it into words, lovely to hear so much familiar stuff. This is so well-balanced and well written. Well done! ♥️♥️♥️

Freya_Knickalicious Absolutely loved this! Exactly what I needed to read today, had a ‘challenging’ few days, thank you, you’re awesome 🫶🏼😘

Marriedsub1983 As a buyer, I can resonate with a lot of this! This space is very addictive and can / will consume your every thought until it’s too late, tseeingvtge signs and when to take a break is key

ItsRuby @Your_play_thing when I was away for a few days last week I felt shit because I missed out on good morning posts😭 need to give myself a break for sure! x

Edenxx I love this! It’s so important❤️

Flywithmesara Yes this!!! Also the worry of not responding to a message quickly you get labelled a sc@mmer or something 🙄🤣. I’ve had to put lots of boundaries in place too x

Your_play_thing Perfectly well said. That fear factor that “you’re going to get left behind” or “what fun am I missing on today” needs to stop. A day off or two or three or more is perfectly acceptable ♥️

Michelle_White I loved reading this and you are absolutely right balance is key. At the moment I am finding the balance hard with not being on ATW very long x
