Lots of Views, Plenty of Messages… So Where Are the Buyers?

The Reality of Being a New Seller on All Things Worn

Starting out as a new seller can be exciting. You create your profile, take your photos, put together your listings, and wait for that first notification from someone who genuinely wants what you’re offering.

Then the views start coming. And more views. You receive a few messages. Maybe even quite a few messages. You answer them, excited that someone is interested.

And then… nothing.

No response. No purchase. No explanation. Welcome to one of the most frustrating parts of being a new seller.

Getting Attention Isn't the Same as Getting Sales

One of the first things I discovered is that getting people to look at your profile and getting people to actually buy something are two completely different things.

A new seller might see dozens or hundreds of profile and listing views and naturally think, Someone has to want something!

But views don't necessarily turn into conversations, and conversations definitely don't always turn into sales.

Sometimes a potential buyer sends a message asking about an item. You respond quickly and enthusiastically, answer their question, and maybe even ask what they're looking for.

Then they disappear.

Other times, someone approaches with an extremely vague request.

"What do you have?"

"What can you do?"

"I'm looking for something special."

Okay… what exactly does "special" mean?

As a seller, you want to provide exactly what someone is looking for, but you're not a mind reader. It can take four or five messages just to figure out what a potential buyer actually wants.

And sometimes, after all of that, they disappear too.

Keeping Track of Everyone Becomes a Job of Its Own

Another challenge I wasn't expecting was simply remembering everyone.

Who did I talk to yesterday?

Which panties did that person ask about?

Did he want a certain color?

Was this the person who wanted a longer wear?

Did I already send him photos?

Was he actually interested or was he just browsing?

Once you're talking to several people across multiple days, keeping track of those conversations can become surprisingly difficult.

For established sellers who have developed their own system, this probably becomes easier. For someone new, however, it can feel overwhelming.

You're trying to create listings, take good photos, respond to messages, promote yourself, learn the platform, figure out what buyers want, package orders and somehow remember every conversation you've had.

And you're doing all of that before you've necessarily made much money.

Not Every Seller Wants to Sell Everything

There's another part of this business that I don't think gets discussed enough.

Different sellers have different boundaries.

There are sellers who enjoy offering sexting, girlfriend experiences, extended chats, video calls and other interactive services. That's perfectly fine if that's what they enjoy providing.

But it isn't what every seller wants to do.

Personally, my primary interest is much simpler:

I want to sell my worn items.

I enjoy wearing something knowing that eventually it's going to belong to someone who specifically wanted it. I enjoy selecting items, creating listings, taking photos and fulfilling someone's particular request.

That's the part of selling that appeals to me.

I don't necessarily have the time or energy to spend hours providing a girlfriend experience or maintaining extended conversations every day.

And sometimes it feels as though simply selling worn items isn't enough anymore.

But maybe it is. Maybe the challenge is finding the buyers who are looking for exactly what you enjoy providing instead of trying to become the kind of seller you think everyone wants.

So How Does a New Seller Actually Succeed?

I'm still figuring that out. And maybe that's the most important point of this entire article. New sellers shouldn't expect to understand everything immediately.

I'm learning that every conversation—even one that doesn't result in a sale—can teach you something.

You begin noticing which listings receive attention. You learn which photographs get more views. You discover which descriptions generate messages. You start recognizing serious buyers versus people who are simply browsing. You learn to ask better questions.

Instead of spending ten messages trying to figure out what someone wants, perhaps the better approach is:

"What item are you interested in?"

"How long would you like it worn?"

"Are there any specific preferences?"

"What extras are you looking for?"

Clear questions can make the conversation easier for both buyer and seller.

Buyers Can Help New Sellers Too

I also think buyers sometimes underestimate how valuable a little feedback can be.

If you look at a seller's listing but decide not to purchase, that's completely understandable. Nobody owes a seller a purchase simply because they looked at something.

But when you've already started a conversation, a simple response can be incredibly helpful.

"I decided it's not for me."

"I'm looking for something different."

"That's outside my budget."

"I'm just browsing right now."

Those few words tell a seller far more than silence does. They also help new sellers understand the marketplace. If several buyers say the same thing, maybe that's information the seller can actually use.

The Temptation to Quit

I'll admit there are moments when being a new seller makes you wonder whether it's worth continuing.

You spend time creating listings. You take pictures. You answer messages. You see people viewing your profile. You watch other sellers making sales.

Meanwhile, you're wondering:

What am I doing wrong? Maybe the answer is nothing. Maybe building a reputation simply takes time.

Buyers don't know you yet. You don't have dozens of reviews. You haven't developed repeat customers. You haven't figured out exactly which corner of the marketplace fits you.

Established sellers didn't start established. At some point, every successful seller had zero reviews and was waiting for their first buyer.

Finding Your Own Kind of Success

I'm beginning to think succeeding as a seller isn't about trying to offer everything.

It's about figuring out what you genuinely enjoy offering, clearly communicating it and finding the buyers who appreciate it.

For me, that means focusing primarily on worn items, photos, videos and reasonable custom requests rather than trying to provide experiences that don't fit my personality, schedule or interests.

I'd rather build a smaller group of buyers who genuinely enjoy what I provide than pretend to be something I'm not simply because I think it will generate more sales.

Maybe that's the biggest lesson for any new seller:

  • Don't measure your beginning against somebody else's established business.
  • Keep improving your listings.
  • Keep experimenting with your photos.
  • Learn from conversations.
  • Respect your own boundaries.
  • Pay attention to what buyers are actually requesting.

And most importantly, give yourself enough time to figure it out.

I'm still learning. I'm still experimenting. I'm still trying to understand exactly what buyers want. And yes, some days it's incredibly frustrating.

But maybe six months from now, I'll look back at those unanswered messages and all those views that didn't turn into sales and realize they were simply part of learning how to become a better seller.

For now, I'm going to keep showing up, keep learning and keep trying.

Because every established seller had to start somewhere.
