A year ago, my life changed very suddenly when I lost my job. Like many people in that situation, the first thing I felt was panic. Bills don’t stop just because your income does, and I had to figure out how to make money fast while planning my next steps.
I started exploring different online platforms and side hustles. Some were the usual suggestions you see everywhere online, but one day I discovered a niche marketplace where people could sell foot pictures, worn clothing and personal items. At first, I didn’t think of it as something I would enjoy, I just needed a way to make money.
So I gave it a try. Interestingly, the first platform I joined wasn’t even All Things Worn. I started on a similar marketplace, mainly out of curiosity and necessity. What I didn’t expect was how much I would come to enjoy it.
When I first started, my focus was simple: I mainly sold foot content. It seemed like the easiest place to start while figuring out this world. But because of my alternative style and aesthetic, I quickly began attracting buyers interested in other niches. At first, it surprised me. I hadn’t realized how much your personal style can shape the audience you attract.
Over time, I realized something important: I genuinely enjoyed this work. Not because of the financial side alone, but because it gave me a chance to express myself, explore creativity, and connect with people.
Listing items and content, presenting them in a way that felt authentic, and interacting with buyers became more like running a small business—something I had control over and took pride in.
One of the most unexpected lessons I’ve learned from this experience is about boundaries. For a long time, I struggled to put them in place in work, relationships, and even how I presented myself online.
Doing this work has taught me how to clearly define what I’m comfortable with and stick to it. It’s empowering to realize that saying “this is my limit” doesn’t push people away—it earns respect.
Beyond boundaries, this journey has completely transformed how I feel about myself. I sell content makeup-free, embrace my natural body, and still feel beautiful.
My little lumps and bumps are adored by people who genuinely appreciate them, and I’ve never felt more confident or more beautiful than I do now.
It’s amazing to see how something that started as a way to survive financially has helped me reclaim my confidence, love my body, and embrace my identity fully.
Another thing I’ve come to really enjoy is getting to know the people who support my work. At first, I thought this would just be transactional: post an item, snap a picture, make a sale, repeat.
What surprised me was how much I enjoy the personal connections that develop. Taking the time to engage with buyers, understand their interests, and interact authentically has made this experience unexpectedly rewarding.
Conversation, interaction, and building something that feels authentic to me. Even in unconventional spaces, I’ve found community, support, and validation, which has been incredibly meaningful.
What started purely as a side hustle—a means to an end after losing my job—has now become my full-time job.
I never expected that something I started out of necessity would grow into something I genuinely love, that gives me confidence, and allows me to embrace my identity. I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Losing my job felt like a sudden setback, but it ultimately opened the door to an unexpected opportunity.
What began as a way to survive financially has turned into something I genuinely love—something that makes me feel empowered, confident, and proud of who I am.
Sometimes the most rewarding opportunities come from paths we never planned to take. For me, this has been one of those paths—one I never expected, but now can’t imagine not exploring. 🖤
