Making a Career from Sex Work

Introduction

Hi! I’m babyaliaaxo, and I’m terrible at introductions. Little disclosure: I am by no means a top seller on All Things Worn. However, I do earn enough to pay my bills, enjoy myself, and save a little; so, I do okay 😅

Here’s a bit of math for you: There are approximately 40,000+ seller accounts on this website and 20,000+ buyer accounts. Not all of these are active, some have even been banned, but it gives you a rough idea of what you’re up against: 2 sellers for every 1 buyer.

Many sellers don’t last longer than 6 months for a few reasons: not enough sales, can’t afford their premium, finding it hard to stand out, making little/no profit, think of it as a short-term quick cash scheme, burnout, and so on. Hopefully, by the end of this blog, you’ll have a better idea of how to tackle the above.

My Background

I’ve been interested in joining the sex industry for a while, however, due to a past relationship I was unable to do so. Fast-forward to today, I’m single and have been a sex worker for almost a year, with sex work being my main source of income the past couple of months. That’s when I started taking this very seriously. This wasn’t just a little extra saving money anymore. I knew if I didn’t do well at this, I would have to get a vanilla job or use my savings to keep me afloat. Not wanting to do either, I sat myself down and thought ‘How could I make a career out of this?’

Mindset

The first thing you must do is change your mindset. As I’ve said, I used to think of this as a little side earner, something I didn’t need but it was nice to have. If you want to make a career out of this, call a spade a spade: you’re now self-employed, starting your own business, in a market that is already overwhelmed with sellers. As with any start-up, it’s not easy, especially at first. You’ll make mistakes, you’ll learn on the job, and you will feel like giving up. The beauty with ATW though, is that you’re not alone; many sellers are in the exact same position as you, with some already having learned from the mistakes you’re going to make. Connect with them, learn with them, and learn from them.

Pricing

When selling physical items, take all costs into account. If I buy a pair of thongs for £3, and spend £1.29 on postage, say £1 all-in on the packaging; that’s over £5 already, not including the labour of wearing the thongs, updating and talking to the buyer, packing the order up, and posting it. Personally, I wouldn’t sell them for less than £12, but everyone prices their labour differently. My point is don’t sell at a loss, it’s not good business practice. Regarding sales, unless you’re still making a profit, I suggest either not doing them, or increasing your original pricing to make sales beneficial for you.

When selling digital items, I tend to do more sales on premade content than custom. Some people find it easy to make custom content, but if you’re like me and don’t live alone, it’s difficult getting the privacy to diddle yourself on camera. premade is just a case of sharing, whereas customs require effort, which brings us back to the whole labour aspect. Make it worth your time.

Standing Out

Going back to the intro, there are around 2 sellers for every 1 buyer on this site. A very important question to ask yourself is “why would a buyer choose me over 1000s of sellers?”

My thing would probably be my personality. I quickly realised the whole sexy persona wasn’t for me; I found posting about my wet undies and nice boobs boring, and if I was going to hate my job I might as well get a vanilla one. Then I realised, hey, I like having a laugh. Simple as that. I post random shit about nothing that makes people laugh and that little red dot appears next to my messages. Now, obviously, I’m not the only one with a sense of humour on this site, so I post frequently. Memes, sarcastic comments, observations, anything that pops into my head really. I genuinely enjoy my job, it doesn’t even feel like work half the time, which is something I’ve never been able to say before.

Take whatever you think makes you stand out and run with it. Do you offer something few sellers do? Is there something about your appearance that’s unique? Do you have a job that buyers find attractive? There are so many factors in your life that can help with your success here, you just have to find out what that is.

Marketing

This is more to do with personal preference than anything. Some sellers prefer a more direct approach: messaging buyers, starting a conversation, and potentially leading to a sale. Other sellers prefer a more indirect approach: posting on the dash and hoping buyers are drawn to them. Neither way is better than the other, some just tend to find one more effective than the other.

I personally can’t speak on the direct approach: I tried, and it just wasn’t for me. I feel a lot more comfortable posting random shit on the dash and having a laugh with sellers and buyers alike; instead of having a one-on-one conversation, I’m building connections with several people, giving first impressions etc. Basically, if it wasn’t for the dash I’d be fucked.

Planning

As with any new business, you need a plan. Answer the following questions: How long are you going to do this? How much time can you dedicate to this? Do you have contingency funds in case, for whatever reason, you don’t earn as much as you need to continue? What kind of motivational tools are you going to use so you keep on track? These questions can be tough to answer, and the answers can change along with your situation, but it’s good to give it a try.

Okay, you’ve got the long-term planning sorted, onto short-term.

I personally like to do monthly plans. I put what sales I’m going to do, what I’ll be adding and improving on my page, my goals for the month, reflect on the previous month’s ups and downs, and take my personal life into account e.g., days off. This again is a personal thing; what works for me may not work for you, but I do recommend having some sort of short-term plan in place to stay motivated.

That’s it from me! As I’ve said I wouldn’t class myself as a top seller, but I thought I would share my perspective on sex work and how I’ve started a career from it. So, in conclusion, stand out, have a plan in place, lean on others, market yourself however works for you, price your items accordingly, and most importantly HAVE FUN!
