If you’d told me a year ago that I’d leave traditional employment, become a full time seller on All Things Worn, inspire my wife to do the same, and be preparing for our first baby all at once, I’d have laughed.
None of this was part of the plan.
Like many people, I joined ATW hoping to make a little extra money. I wasn’t expecting it to change our lives.
When I found out I was pregnant, my first trimester hit me harder than I ever imagined. The sickness was relentless, and working on my feet all day became almost impossible.
After taking two weeks off work, I found myself wondering what I was going to do. I needed flexibility. I needed an income. Most importantly, I needed something I could work around my pregnancy instead of forcing my pregnancy to work around a job.
I’d actually been on ATW on and off for years. I’d sold the odd item here and there, but I’d never really taken it seriously. Work always came first because a steady wage felt like the sensible option.
This time felt different.
I told myself that if I was going to do this, I was going to really try.
I’ll be honest, my expectations were incredibly low.
I thought I’d make roughly what I’d made before, a few sales here and there, maybe enough to cover the odd expense. I certainly wasn’t imagining a full time income.
My wife, Liv, was incredibly supportive of me trying. She never minded that I sold online, but neither of us really believed it would become anything significant.
In fact, she encouraged me to start looking for another job that would be easier during pregnancy because, realistically, that seemed like the safer option.
Looking back now, neither of us had any idea what was about to happen.
The first few sales gave me hope.
Then another came in.
Then another.
Before long, I wasn’t just making the occasional payment. I was earning something every single day.
I remember saying to Liv, “Just let me try. Really try.”
Instead of treating ATW like a backup plan, I started treating it like a business.
I worked hard. I learned what buyers wanted. I improved my listings. I replied quickly to messages. I became consistent.
Slowly, things started to grow.
For the first time in a long time, I felt genuinely excited about working.
There was no manager standing over me.
No clocking in.
No spending all day on my feet while feeling unwell.
I could choose my own hours, decide which orders I wanted to accept, and build something that actually worked around my life instead of the other way around.
More than the income, I found something I hadn’t realised I was missing. Freedom.
As the weeks went by, Liv watched everything unfold.
She saw the excitement every time I made a sale.
She saw my confidence growing.
She saw that I genuinely enjoyed what I was doing.
Eventually, she said she’d like to give it a go herself.
That was the beginning of something neither of us expected.
Instead of one seller, there were two.
I helped her learn the ropes, shared everything I’d learned, and watched her confidence grow too.
It stopped being my little project and became our journey.
These days, we genuinely work as a team.
We help each other with photos.
We pack orders together.
We keep on top of messages.
We bounce ideas off each other when we’re planning new listings or customs.
We celebrate every sale, encourage each other through quieter periods, and continue learning together.
Running ATW together has brought us closer in ways I never imagined.
People often assume working with your partner all day would be difficult.
For us, it’s been the complete opposite.
A few months later, Liv made the decision to leave her job too.
That wasn’t a decision we made overnight.
It was scary.
When you’re self employed, there’s no guaranteed wage waiting for you at the end of the month.
There’s no clocking in and clocking out.
No paid holidays.
No sick pay.
No certainty.
We knew that if we wanted this life, we’d have to work for it every single day.
Walking away from stable employment meant trusting ourselves enough to believe we could build something sustainable together.
We were risking the security we’d always known. Rent, bills, our pets, everyday expenses. It all depended on us making this work.
Looking back, it was the best decision we’ve ever made.
Of course, earning a living doing something we enjoy has been incredible.
But the biggest change wasn’t financial.
It’s what happened to us as a couple.
We communicate more.
We trust each other completely.
We’ve become more confident, not only in ourselves and our bodies, but in setting boundaries and supporting one another.
We’ve built shared goals instead of chasing separate careers.
Most importantly, we’ve created a life where we get to work alongside each other every single day.
That freedom is something we’ll never take for granted.
What started as one wife taking a chance became two wives building a future together.
ATW has given us so much more than an income. It gave us confidence, freedom, friendship within the community, and the opportunity to create a life that works for us.
Now, as we prepare to welcome our first baby, we’re incredibly grateful that one unexpected decision changed the course of our lives.
If there’s one thing this journey has taught us, it’s that sometimes the biggest opportunities begin with simply taking a chance.
