Things Nobody Tells You About Being A Dominatrix

What I’ve Learned About Being a Dominatrix

When I first started, I thought being a Dominatrix was mainly about looking confident, looking hot, and acting powerful. And yes… that is part of it. But honestly? I quickly realised there is no “one glove fits all” method when it comes to domination.

Some guys want soft nurturing dominance. Some want praise. Some just want to be lightly told off a little bit. Others want something much more intense. And learning the difference is one of the biggest skills you can have as a Domme.

So, here are some of the things I’ve personally learned along the way and some advice I’d give to newer Dommes.

Communication Is EVERYTHING.

Especially online. You can’t see someone’s body language through a screen. You can’t see facial expressions, nerves, hesitation, excitement… nothing.

You’re basically trying to read people through text. And trust me, text gets misunderstood ALL the time. Some people want you to instantly go into full Dominatrix mode from the very first message. Others actually feel more comfortable discussing things normally first before getting into character.

Learning where that line is takes time.

Personally, I’d suggest starting off fairly confident, but without instantly going into your full persona straight away. Give them a feel for your energy first and see where the conversation naturally goes. Usually, you can tell quite quickly by how somebody responds.

Some clients will stay in normal conversation mode at first, while others will immediately start speaking in character or leaning into the dynamic. Once you get a feel for what they’re looking for, it becomes much easier to guide the conversation from there.

Don’t Give Too Much Away For Free

This is something I learned the hard way.

Some people genuinely want a session. Others just enjoy the thrill of talking to a Dominant and will happily drag out conversation for ages without ever intending to buy anything.

So my advice?

Give a teaser. Show confidence. Show personality. Let them get a feel for your energy.

But don’t instantly give somebody a full free experience before discussing payment, boundaries, or what they actually want.

At the end of the day, your time still matters.

Stop Trying To Be Somebody Else

I think this is one of the biggest mistakes new Dommes make.

People are paying for you. Not a copy of another creator. You don’t need to force yourself into one “Domme type” just because you saw somebody else doing it online.

Some Dommes are nurturing. Some are strict. Some love humiliation play. Some enjoy pain play. Some prefer softer psychological control. And others may have hard limits around things they simply do not want to participate in.

Some Dommes may enjoy only one of these areas, while others enjoy a mixture of several or even all of them. You do not need to squeeze yourself into one category to be valid.

If something genuinely makes you uncomfortable or just doesn’t interest you, don’t force yourself into it because you think you “should.” Clients can usually tell when somebody is forcing a persona. The best domination feels natural.

For example, I personally love the visual side of becoming a Dominatrix. PVC, dressing up, stepping into that energy, I enjoy it. It makes me feel powerful.

But another Domme might feel sexiest and most dominant sitting there in normal clothes being completely herself.

And honestly? Some clients prefer that.

Not Everybody Knows What They Want Yet

Some people know exactly what they’re into. Others genuinely have no clue yet. And that’s why understanding different areas of BDSM is important, even if you personally don’t do all of them.

You learn:

  • Different dynamics
  • Boundaries
  • Personalities
  • Emotional reactions
  • How different people communicate

Sometimes you even realise: “Actually… I’m probably not the right Domme for this person.”

And that’s okay too. Not every dynamic is going to fit every person.

Reading People Is A Skill

A lot of domination is psychological.

You learn to notice:

  • Hesitation
  • Confidence levels
  • Communication styles
  • Emotional reactions
  • How much guidance someone needs
  • Whether they want comfort, structure, intensity, praise, discipline, or reassurance

You will not get it perfect every time. Especially online. That doesn’t make you bad at it. It just means you’re still learning how different people communicate.

Aftercare Matters More Than People Think

Aftercare doesn’t always have to be some huge dramatic thing. Sometimes it’s literally just checking in afterwards. Especially after intense roleplay or emotional dynamics.

I personally think giving someone a little time to process things can help, but I do think checking in within 24 hours is important. People remember how you made them feel after the session too.

And honestly? A simple message later that day can make a huge difference.

Final Thoughts

I think people massively oversimplify what being a Dominatrix actually is. It’s not just being mean in heels. A lot of it is psychology, communication, confidence, boundaries, adaptability, and understanding people.

You learn how to read personalities.
How to communicate properly.
How to balance confidence without overdoing it.
How to create an experience that feels genuine for both you and the client.

A lot of it comes through trial and error. You’re not going to get every interaction perfect straight away, especially online where you can’t fully read somebody through a screen. But the biggest thing I’ve personally learned is this:

The best Dominants are usually the ones who feel authentic.

Not the ones trying hardest to fit into a stereotype. Find the style that feels natural to you, build confidence in it, learn your boundaries, and let your own personality become part of the experience. Because at the end of the day, people are not just paying for a “Dominatrix.”

They’re paying for your energy, your presence, and the way you make them feel.
