This blog is for informational purposes only and is not intended as professional medical advice. If you’re experiencing symptoms or have concerns about your vaginal health, please seek care from a qualified medical professional.
Trust me when I say, I’ve had my run around the sun when it comes to Bacterial Vaginosis. As someone who sells panties online, I’ve learned a lot about vaginal hygiene through my experience with BV, and with the help of my OB-GYN. In this blog post you’ll learn more about what BV is, and how to get rid of it. I’m sharing what I’ve learned through personal experience and guidance from medical professionals. This is not medical advice. If something feels off, always check in with a healthcare provider.
Bacterial Vaginosis affects around 21 million women annually. In the United States alone about 29% of women aged 14–49 have the infection. The key to bringing these percentages down is education.
So, what is BV and where does it come from? Bacterial vaginosis is a common, treatable vaginal infection caused by an imbalance of natural bacteria, specifically an overgrowth of harmful bacteria.
Our bodies are filled with trillions of both good and bad bacteria, and our vaginas generally do a very good job of cleaning out any bad bacteria that’s introduced. But the vagina has a sweet spot that’s needed in order to maintain a healthy vaginal biome. For the vagina to do its job well, it needs an acidic environment of a pH between 3.5–4.5 to protect against infection.
While BV is not an STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection), it can be transmitted via intercourse with both men and women. Douching, using harsh soaps, smoking, and wearing the same pair of dirty underwear for too long are all strongly linked to the disruption of normal vaginal bacteria (lactobacilli), causing our vaginas to be all out of whack.
Symptoms of BV include a fishy odor, itchiness and discomfort in or around the genitalia, and changes in discharge consistency and color.
If untreated, BV will not go away on its own. The most effective way to treat BV is through antibiotics. You can get antibiotics through your primary doctor, OB-GYN, or Planned Parenthood. Penis havers can also spread BV, and currently there isn’t a way to test men for BV. If a partner who has a vagina tests positive for BV, it’s best to have all partners take antibiotics to help reduce the risk of BV being reintroduced.
How does this affect me as someone who sells panties online? After antibiotics, ways to reduce the risk of infection include wearing natural fiber underwear and maintaining good hygiene habits by washing after a workout (only with water) and trying to maintain a healthy pH balance.
If you’re someone (like me) who does not use condoms during sex with penis havers, it can be helpful to do a boric acid wash once a week to bring your pH balance back to where it needs to be. Semen is naturally very basic, so I recommend planning boric acid washes around your sexual habits and doing it right after intercourse while you’re asleep. I personally use pH-D Feminine Health boric acid.
You can also increase good bacteria like Lactobacillus through your diet. Fermented foods rich in Lactobacillus include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kombucha.
Taking probiotics can help as well, although it’s important to note that not all foods and supplements labeled as “probiotic” contain Lactobacillus. Always check the ingredient list for specific bacterial strains.
In conclusion, if you’re ever feeling itchy, experiencing discolored discharge, or noticing a fishy smell, it’s best to see a medical professional and ask to be tested for BV. Trust me — it’s worth it.
